Origin: From Arabic al-qāḍī ('the judge'), via Old Spanish.

Usage Note

Alcalde is the mayor of a Spanish municipality; the feminine form alcaldesa has been in standard use since at least the 20th century. The office is la alcaldía ('the mayoralty' or 'city hall'). In Spain the alcalde presides over the ayuntamiento (town council); in Latin America the equivalent can be called intendente or presidente municipal depending on the country.
