Ahí denotes a location close to the listener but not to the speaker — the middle distance in the Spanish three-way system: aquí (here, near me), ahí (there, near you), allí/allá (over there, away from both). It is also used figuratively in phrases like ahí está el problema (that's where the problem lies). In Latin America the contrast between ahí and allí is often blurred.
