noun AHN-foh-rah Rare

Origin: Latin amphora, from Greek amphoreus (two-handled jar)

Usage Note

Ánfora is a proparoxytone (stress on the antepenultimate syllable), so it takes a written accent. In Latin America, ánfora is also the common term for the ballot box used in elections, a usage not found in Spain. Its plural is ánforas.
